My mom’s a teacher, and she has these books in her classroom……They are the best book series I ever read and probably ever will read in my whole life. I hope there’s an extension to this series, or a movie!

Hi! I’ve just finished the 3rd book, Gatekeepers, and I was just wondering… Why always the cliffhanger? I’m lucky my local library has the entire series, but there’s all the these feelings that just come with the read, and when you end the book “NOT the end…” it kinda, sorta, maybe make me wanna just through the book across thew room – not that I’d ever do that.

Anyway, LOVE the art. I definitly saw some ones I liked! I moght just be sending in some art too, that is, if I ever learn how to work a scanner. Heh heh… Awkward…

  18. November 14th, 2012Robert Liparulo say:

Hi! Most readers who have written to me seem to enjoy the cliffhangers at the end of each book. A typical response: “My friends and I always try to guess what’s going to happen next. It’s fun to see who’s closest when we get the next book.”

And that’s one of the reasons I decided to structure the story this way. When I was a kid, the local theater showed serialized short movies before the feature. They were usually ten-minute clips of a western or a Robin Hood story or something like that. Each ended with the hero in some great danger, with no easy escape. Until the next episode, we imagined all sorts of ways he or she would get out of the trouble. Some of the ideas were wild and implausible (“Angels will come down and rescue him!”), others more believable (“Remember? He’s got that lock-pick thing in his shoe!”). I hope the Dreamhouse Kings cliffhangers encourages conversations like this.

Another reason for writing the Dreamhouse books this way is that it’s a big story. I just couldn’t tell it in one book (or even two or three books). It seemed logical to me to give readers something exciting to look forward to.

Still, I know cliffhangers can be as frustrating as they are fun. I don’t even watch television shows when they first air; I’m too impatient. I usually wait until the whole season is available on DVD or iTunes, then I’ll watch all the episodes at once. Every now and then, however, I’ll catch a show and can’t help myself: I start that once-a-week ritual of planting myself in front of the TV, bowl of popcorn in hand, to catch the next show. My wish is for Dreamhouse to give you that excited sense of anticipation.

I conducted a poll about cliffhangers a few years ago. 51% said they liked the cliffhangers in the Dreamhouse Kings series; 46% said they liked them as long as the next book was available; and 3% said they didn’t like cliffhangers.

I’d love to see your art!

Disapointingly the artwork did not appear on my screen, but I just wanted to say that I love your books. I read a ton so I can ususally guess what will happen, but these books were the only ones that I have ever read that I couldn’t predict accuratly. I love that, because it keeps me reading. Some nights I’d stay up late because I couldn’t put the book down due to how good they were. Also they were the only books that have ever made me cry. I know that sounds bad but that just shows you how connected I got to the characters. Especally at the end of Frenzy when they are in Rome…I think you know what i am talking about :) That part, in my opinion was the best. Particurally when he said his name. You are a very talented writer. The way you can make the characters sound. Xander, Impulsive and a bit impatient, but strong and willing to go through anything to save his mother. David, my personal favorite, caring, and thoughtful. Dad, the wise one, knows to take things slow, that you can’t jump into battle with no strategy. Toria, young but strong like Xander and kind like David. If there is ever a movie, it has to follow the book. :) Also I think I need to read your other books. :) I’ve only read Dreamhouse Kings… Sorry that was a bit long…

These books make me want to scream, cry, and hysterically laugh all at the same time. I don’t think any other book has ever done that to me. Well played, Mr. Liparulo. Well. Played.

I LOVE this book series! It’s inspired me to write my own book :) thank you for writing DHK!! Personally, I think it’s better than Harry Potter and deserves to be a movie! If it never becomen a movie, I’m going to make a movie of this with my friends and put on YouTube. There will be six movies and they will get a boatload of praise (see what I did there?)

When the Kings move to a small town in northern California, they have no idea of the adventures—and terrors—waiting for them. Fifteen-year old Xander and his twelve-year-old brother David make a game of exploring the old Victorian home they move into. One night, they discover an intruder and follow him to a hidden hallway of doors. Each door transports them to far off places in long-ago times.
